Geographic range: Nearctic - Neotropical: From extreme south Texas and E Mexico to W Panama. In Mexico only on Atlantic slope from Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas south.

Physical characteristics: Large jay. Two color morphs:
Dark (E Mexico) - overall dark brown body with lighter colored belly.
Lighter (SE Mexico) -
overall dark brown, belly whitish.
Both forms interbreed where sympatric. Adult birds have dark bill and legs, juveniles orbital ring and bill yellow.

Food habits: Varied diet includes insects, fruit, seeds, small vertebrates and possibly carrion.

Reproduction: Cooperative breeder. Typical clutch 2 -7 pale gray eggs, with grayish markings.

Behavior: Usually in groups of 5 -15 individuals.

Habitat:
Large variety of habitat from semiarid to humid forested areas, edges, second growth, also plantations and semi open habitats.
