In the terms of biodiversity, Mexico belongs
to five most important regions of the world taking the first place
in reptile biodiversity with 717 described species, second in mammals
(502), fourth in amphibians (290) and vascular plants (26,000) and
tenth in birds (1,150).
In general terms, Mexico concentrates 10% of all known species living
on the Earth of which a large portion doesn't exist anywhere else
- some 574 out of the 717 reptile species are endemic to Mexico!
This exclusivity and accumulation of environments and forms of life
is rightly called Biological Megadiversity. |
